While we are originally from Barcelona, Victor has family living in Mexico City, and his aunt wanted to get all the Catalan family together with her Mexican family in order to celebrate her 60th birthday. We parked the van in Tijuana and flew in to Mexico City for a couple weeks of family time. Some of our parents, uncles and cousins also flew in from Barcelona and we rented a Toyota van for a road trip all together.
Our Mexican family has the tradition of celebrating all their important events in a old beautiful hacienda in the state of Tlaxcala, about a couple hours away from the city. The hacienda used to be a producer of Pulque, an alcoholic beverage made of Maguey (a cactus) that was the everyday drink in Mexico before beer arrived in the country. There is a new trend trying to get pulque popular again, and cool “pulquerĂas” can be found all around the country. We had delicious food, danced and sang to Mariachis and had a great time celebrating together.

We made several stops on our trip, San Miguel de Allende being one of the highlights. While it’s a very touristy town, it’s a really beautiful place with a lot of interesting stores, cafes, narrow little streets and an amazing history and architecture.
We absolutely loved Ciudad de México. It’s a vibrant, modern city with lots of things going on. There’s a big community of youngsters organizing cultural events, music, art, politics, …We really connected with the city, even though traffic and pollution almost wanted us to kill ourselves. We met really nice and interesting people and had some urban life time.
If we had to say one single favourite thing in Mexico, it would be markets every time. The colours, the noise, the smells…it’s all very intense and even shocking at sometimes, but it’s a experience like no other.
